I was thinking about this last night when it looked like OSU had all the momentum:
Assume the Beavers won last night and USC wins tommorow, who do you think the Holiday Bowl would have taken?
A USC team they have NEVER managed to get, or an Oregon team who they hosted last year? Their overall records were the same and their confernce records would have been within one of each other. Of course we will enver know, but I wouldn’t have been surprised if the Ducks had ended up in El Paso.

They would’ve had no choice but to take Oregon. The Ducks would have been alone in second place, and according to everything I’ve read, the Pac-10 bowls don’t have the same discretion as some other bowls (ACC, SEC, etc.) to disregard the conference standings. That’s why most Trojan fans were rooting for Oregon last night, because a Beaver win would’ve doomed us to the Sun Bowl.

This is also why USC is definitely Poinsettia-bound if we lose to Arizona (and Cal beats UW). The Holiday, Sun, Emerald and Las Vegas bowls will not be allowed to take USC if we finish alone in sixth place in the conference, with Oregon State, Stanford, Arizona and Cal in a four-way tie for second. Those bowls would be free to take any of the four tied teams, but they can’t jump down to USC and take us. At least that’s my understanding. I sent a tweet to Stewart Mandel and Andy Staples this morning asking them to confirm this, but haven’t heard back yet.
If your Huskies can upset Cal, then I guess USC could end up in the Las Vegas Bowl with a loss to Arizona, with Cal going to the Poinsettia.

Are we sure they are obligated to choose by place?

The Holiday Bowl definitely is, yes. (But again, as things have unfolded, they’re free to choose any of the tied-for-second teams, regardless of tiebreakers. But if Oregon had lost, they would have been required to take the Ducks.)
The Sun and other bowls, I’ve seen conflicting reports about whether they can take teams “out of order.” Most of the reporting makes no mention of this possibility, but there are a few reports that say they could take USC if the Trojans lose to Arizona. Not sure who’s right.

I wonder if that holds true under the new agreement with the Alamo Bowl.

I just don’t want to see USC vs. Oklahoma, wherever they end up. The worse bowl the better, I don’t think USC could beat many of the Bowl Teams this year especially considering that UCLA and Notre Dame are not going bowling. USC vs. Wyoming sounds like a good game.
