Although . . . looking at David’s chart again, Denver was originally in the 11 spot, and they traded that down. So in a round about way, they traded down for Tebow. Can’t complain too much on that one.
David K.
Well, SORT of, they traded way down and then traded back up, giving up a 2nd, 3rd and 4th round pick to end up at 25 in the 1st round and get Tebow, now because of other trades they still have some picks in those later rounds, but it was a very strange circuitous route they took, and really they could have gotten him later.

But trading up to get somebody no one else was after seems stupid
This is no doubt true, in the abstract, though it seems not to apply in Tebow’s case. The Patriots (@27) were interested, as were the Browns and Bills early in the 2nd round. As much as I viscerally dislike Tebow, for the Gator thing and the “trade-toothbrushes-to-desperately-poor-Phillipinos-for-the-chance-to-cut-their-screaming-infants’-penises” thing, I think you’ll find this is a great pick for the Broncos.
First, a rant: will Tebow finally put to bed that crazy, ‘sportzy’ industry of Mel Kiper and other so-called draft experts talking about how “talented” guys are, how they have all the tools? For the millionth time, but the first for Mel, will someone tip off Kiper that Talent is Overrated?
I bet if we rewound the clock a dozen years, Mel and others like him would tell us how Ryan Leaf has all the tools, while Peyton Manning is a basketcase, maybe he would have said that Manning was the kind of guy who would lose all but one playoff game to his unheralded archrival, who would lose 4 (!) home divisional playoff games in a row, who would choke late in a Super Bowl against one of the most woeful franchises in professional sports. In spite of all of that, Manning has been a large net positive for the Colts, because the most important trait for a quarterback is the level of commitment coming from those three inches between his ears.
Which is what you have to love about Tebow. While QB’s such as Bradford defend their NFL-worthiness in interviews (in Bradford’s defense, he’s fending off questions about his shoulder), and others gracefully say that they’re just honored to be there, Tebow is all about getting better, he’s all about learning and improving. Hell, dude is probably studying the Broncos playbook as I write this. Tebow got a lot better at Florida since his days as a glorified Wildcat alternative to Chris Leak. He will probably be a great quarterback in the NFL too, though I will hate every minute of it. Kudos to the (stinking) Broncos for picking him.
Indeed. Although Kiper actually thought Tebow would go in the first round this time around. But the whole draft industrial complex just bothers me. “Here’s the 20th. mock draft that will be completely useless once we have, you know, the ACTUAL DRAFT!”
I’m not anti Tebow. In fact, I think he can do well in the NFL, and hope Tebow proves these self proclaimed experts wrong!
But trading up to get somebody no one else was after seems stupid. Why not save some money and picks thanks to these so called experts?
