He didn’t explicitly say he won’t fix it in that statement. Unless there is a more explicit statement it seems he has left himself at least some wiggle room.
I noticed that too. I assume there must be some basis, beyond the written statement, for all the reporting that he announcing he won’t fix it, since the statement so clearly says nothing of the sort. But maybe not — the media have been a bunch of dumbasses before, certainly.
My guess is the talking to stake holders part isn’t just about replay. And might also be tying to gauge fan reaction by letting the media infer he won’t fix it. If it seems people are okay with that he will likely let it stand, if there is major outrage he can still do something with out blatantly back tracking… Saying something like after talking it over with the players unions, the umpires union and the GMs of both teams and blah blah blah I’ve decided it is in the best interest of baseball to reverse the call and let the perfect game stand. He can always fix it later, he can’t really unfix it after he fixes it.
This is vintage Selig. The whole steroid problem was ignored for years. Years! Not even mentioned by the commish.
