Mixed feelings. It’ll be cool to see Nebraska go to a new conference and give it a shot in the arm, but I’m not as happy about how it changes the geographic footprint of the program.
A lot of Nebraska fans won’t be able to travel as easily to see games, like they did for Colorado or the Kansas schools, and there is a far bigger Nebraska fanbase in Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas and Missouri than in the Big Ten. When I lived in the Chicago area, I couldn’t find any Nebraska fans outside my immediate family.
All of this conference realignment talk is exciting at one level, but my fear is that nobody is thinking about the day-to-day nitty gritty changes that might actually kind of suck. It’s one thing to expand or merge conferences, quite another for a single school to shift conference affiliation when the conference geography doesn’t overlap as well (as in the Big East and ACC).
