RT @GrantWahl: FT #USA 1:0 #ALG US wins Group C, could be facing a workable path to the semifinals of World Cup 2010. Unbelievable emotion on field.

Yeah, if Germany wins today (or looses, but then other stuff would need to happen. But I wouldn’t say having to face Germany in the first round is particularly workable.)

According to Nate Silver, “United States wants to avoid Germany finishing in 2nd. That happens if 1) Germany draws with Ghana AND 2) Australia draws or beats Serbia.”
However, looking at the standings myself, it appears you’re right that Germany losing would also be bad, IF Australia beats Serbia. (If Germany loses and Serbia wins or draws, Germany finishes third & is out.)
Bottom line, if Serbia beats Australia, as seems likely, we’re in the clear no matter what Germany does. On the other hand, as Nate also notes: “Best case for United States is if Ghana and Australia both win; then we face the Aussies. But that scenario is 20:1 against.”
