While I think its completely asinine to punish the program given the lack of evidence I can understand why they are doing what they are doing. Still, it bothers me that they are essentially re-writing history. Bush’s on field accomplishments are what they are. We see athletes who engage in criminal behavior that are given far more leniency than Bush was given. In the face of the NCAA’s profiteering off Bush and others its even more frustrating. None of this excuses Bush if he indeed break the rules, but its the whole punishment fitting the crime aspect of this that just doesn’t seem quite right.
Incidentatly I think that USC’s biggest mistake was keeping Garrett around for as long as it did. I wonder if they had been more pro-active in their behavior before the report came out if the punishments might have been less severe.
