Pac-10 ponders annual kickoff game at Rose Bowl: http://bit.ly/cOH0H5. Big Ten as opponent? Screw that; redundant. Make it Pac-10 vs. SEC!!!

I completely agree — make it an SEC-Pac-12 clash, and alternate every year between the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl.
Why alternate? Why not have a game every year in the Rose Bowl AND a game every year in the Sugar Bowl, we’ve got 12 teams and so do they (although finding 2 SEC teams willing to PLAY Pac-12 teams is probably the hardest part)
These are all great ideas, but personally I just want USC to play a home-and-home with LSU (screw this neutral-site nonsense) and I swear I will fly to Baton Rouge for the game at Death Valley. Always wanted to go to a game there. Bonus: going to a USC game there, wearing USC apparel. Downside: death.

At least you will die with a stomach full of very yummy Crawfish Étouffée and beer.
Don’t forget the beignets
Kinda/sorta related, looks like others are coming up with the same idea we did here regarding the Pac-10 alignment:

Sorry Brendan 🙂
The only other issue would be repeat games, with rivals playing each other in the final week and then also in the championship game. This could be easily solved by making the rule that only the winner of the natural-rivalry can play in the conference championship game, if both are slated to make it there.
Huh?!? So a 7-2 or even 6-3 team from USC’s division gets into the title game over the 8-1 Trojans just because USC’s lone loss happened to be to division champ UCLA? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
Meanwhile, um, NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Love it. My California theory (shared by David) is also vindicated by some independent press reports that indicate the California schools are fairly adamant about preserving their in-state rivalries.
Fine fine splendid, but USC still needs to be in Colorado’s division, dammit.
I hadn’t seen that part, thats entirely stupid. The natural rivalry thing is solved by moving the games to the middle of the season.
Agreed. So long as the rivalry games aren’t played back-to-back on the calendar with potential rivalry title games, the potential of a championship game between, say, USC and UCLA, or Washington and Wazzu (okay, that one may take a few years), or Cal and Stanford, etc., is a feature, not a bug.
I agree that a Pac/SEC kickoff classic would be a good idea.
However, I don’t know whether to mourn wistfully or giggle that this proposal could result in Nebraska-Colorado.
@JD – Nebraska is joining the Big Ten(Twelve) not the SEC.
Perhaps I should have flipped my sentences around. The original Pac-10/Big Ten kickoff idea would lead to NU-CU, of course.
It depends on what the meaning of “this” is. 😛
Uh…
