Hitchens on his cancer: “To the dumb question ‘Why me?’ the cosmos barely bothers to return the reply: Why not?” http://bit.ly/9JMGBB
Wonderful, wonderful piece. I was gripped. I dare say that cancer is the only thing that truly scares me in life. Plenty else might suck in their own way, but none causes the same random and occasional feeling of dread. The instant I recognize something physically wrong with me, at least one of the many conflicting thoughts that immediately deluges my brain inevitably is, “Could it be cancer?”
I have always respected Hitchens for his pursuit of reason through thorough, ruthless rationality. I find plenty of things to not agree on with him, but I always respect how he gets to his answers. I hope he beats his cancer — and I look forward to then reading his take on the “astonishing” number of prayer groups interceding on his behalf.
Although I am not a fan of Hitchens beliefs, particularly on God, I too hope he beats his cancer. And I agree, cancer is truly frightening.
