It almost doesn’t matter who switches and when; at some point, these two conferences are going to need to rejoin and become a super-conference. They can wait for the Pac-16 or the Big-14, or they can do it first.

Not necessiarlly. If the Big-12 had collapsd there was a good chance that some of their remaining members (Kansas, K State, Iowa State, Baylor and Missouri) might join with Boise State, TCU, etc to form a new BCS level league, at which point the remaining MW members would probably merge with the WAC or Conf USA (or Sun Belt i suppose). That STILL might be the eventual outcome if both leagues survive this round, although the WAC certainly takes it on the chin the worst.
