Yeah, pretty much. Although to be fair I think the ACC gets a worse wrap from this than it should. The ACC cannot hang with the elite teams of the country, I wouldn’t argue against that. But the ACC actually is pretty strong against the “middle” if you will. Analysis like this:

is kind of where I’m going with this. Granted this was last year, we’ll see how things go this year, it doesn’t look good after this past weekend.

I agree. The ACC has long been a league with a weak top, a strong middle, and a relatively strong/small “bottom.” It’s basically the opposite of the SEC, which perpetually has a strong top, a vastly overrated middle, and a putrid bottom. The ACC is more analogous to the Pac-10, except it lacks a USC (talking about the last decade in general, not necessarily this year, when USC isn’t in its recently-typical elite form). This year, the Pac-10’s top appears to be stronger than the ACC’s, but in general, the conferences are structurally pretty similar. Parity and intraconference cannibalism tends to kill the middle teams and keep them from contending for anything or earning a lot of national respect, but they’re solid leagues.

Brendan: Yeah, I’d agree with that analysis.

I’m curious to see what Maryland does against West Virginia this weekend. Based on last week West Virginia looked vulnerable, but until they get out on the field I think everyone’s pensive that this is still last year’s terrible team.
