College football is never dull (unless you were at the New Mexico/New Mexico State game a few weeks back). Here’s some of the latest.
– In case you missed Brendan’s tweets, here you go. Dan Hawkins, whose success at bringing Boise State to the national stage led to his hiring by Colorado in 2005, is out after 4 lackluster seasons with the Buffs, and a spectacular fourth quarter collapse against Kansas on Saturday. Potential replacements being speculated so far? Troy Calhoun (Air Force), Jon Gruden (former NFL HC), Brent Venables (Oklahoma – DC), Mike Bellotti(former Oregon HC), Les Miles (LSU), Bill McCartney (former Colorado HC, retired in 1994). Wait, Les Miles? Seriously? Yeah he’s gonna leave LSU for Colorado…
– TCU’s Athletic Director shot down the idea that his team could join the Big East as a football only member, saying that his teams will all compete in the same conference, currently the Mountain West. Although the Big East membership would help TCU with an automatic BCS bid shot each year and better path to the NC game, the physical distance would be difficult for both the Forth Worth, TX school and the other Big East members, especially in smaller, non-revenue sports. Plus TCU’s basketball program would get eaten alive in the super competitive Big East.
– Looks like Auburns star QB, and Heisman front runner, Cam Newton has some extra things to worry about. On top of allegations that he may have been shopped around to schools by an agent, now comes news that he was caught cheating three times while at Florida, and was set to face a discipline hearing and possible expulsion before he transfered to Blinn Junior College in Texas. Florida coach Urban Meyer denies that he or his staff were involved in the leaks.
– Speaking of QB’s, Oregon isn’t having the best luck in that area, well other than the success of their current starter Darron Thomas. First you have Jeremiah Masoli kicked off the team last spring for, among other things, stealing a laptop. Now, current back up Nate Costa, who had allready been through three knee surgiers, will need a fourth after being injured during last weekends game against Washington. Costa, a senior, is done for the season and that means his college football career is over.
Newton will never get the Heisman now…no one is going to vote for him after Bush earlier this year.
How soon does Auburn bench him so they won’t have to eventually forfeit the games he starts from now on?
There’s no point in benching Newton now, he’s started every game they won, which is 10 and counting. I wonder if they bench him in the national championship game, if the NCAA would just vacate all the previous 13 games Auburn won with him, and would make them the first 1-0 National Champion.
Of course Auburn will lose their last two games of the season Bama/Florida, so it doesn’t really matter.
Although after the NCAA’s BS with USC, it would be awesome to see a player who is being directly paid by a university and everyone knows it win the Heisman and win the BCS championship. It would put the perfect bow on all the BS the NCAA brought down this year.
