My high school freshman year World Geography teacher used to mess with us and tell us that there were Soviet subs sitting just off Catalina, and if they decided to launch, we’d have ~ 5 minutes before we’d be toast.
* Technically they would have been Russian subs, since the USSR had broken up by 1994.

I went to high school on a first strike Air Force base in England during the early 1980s. Not only did I live with the knowledge that if we ever went to war with the USSR that I would never know about it (because I would already be dead from a chemical or bnuclear strike..probably both), I used to watch all the military personal go on alerts and practice wearing their MOPP gear.
