Against mid-major powerhouse Utah State Wednesday night, the Denver Pioneers appeared much improved, especially on defense, and looked like a team better than their win-loss record would suggest (with apologies to Bill Parcells). Offensively, DU stayed in the game thanks in large part to 11-of-22 shooting from three-point land — and, in contrast to recent post-halftime struggles, a 16-3 second-half run that turned a ten-point deficit into a three-point lead.
But the lead didn’t last, and in the end, the Pios still lost to the Blue Aggies, 61-53, to fall to 1-6 on the season, 1-2 at Magness Arena (where they were 15-1 last season). They host Cal State Northridge on Saturday, looking to notch a second win before a tough pair of games against St. Mary’s and Portland of the WCC. 1-6 could easily become 1-9 if DU’s improvement doesn’t translate into a win on Saturday.
