Tulsa’s surprise 62-35 win over Hawaii in a Christmas Eve shootout — on the Warriors’ home turf in the Hawaii Bowl — lifted Rachel Dulitz and Andrew Hunter, previously in a 14-way tie for fifth place, into a three-way tie for first place with Randy Styles in the 6th annual LRT Bowl Pick ’em Contest. Styles had been a perfect 6-0 and alone in first.
Dulitz, who is Jewish, rejoiced on Twitter, calling the result a “Jewish Christmas miracle.”
The sudden jump by Dulitz and Hunter (5-2) was possible because the Hawaii Bowl is worth 2 points, whereas most bowls to date have only been worth 1 point apiece. Just as important, Dulitz and Hunter were two of just three contestants out of 39 in the pool to correctly pick Tulsa; the other one, Ben Sloniker a.k.a. “FLOORCHEESE,” climbed from a 34th-place tie into a 5th-place tie.
Styles, meanwhile, drops to 6-1, which remains the best win-loss record in the contest. But he, Dulitz and Hunter all have 7 points.
The three-way tie among that trio of contestants will remain in place for 48 hours or so, as the bowls take Christmas Day off. Then on Sunday, either Dulitz will take sole possession of the lead (if Florida International wins the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl), or Styles and Hunter will move to a 2-way tie (if Toledo wins).
