Of course, Rhode Island is most famous for the Colossus of Rhodes. one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Yet it wasn’t named after the colossus, of course. It was named after Cecil Rhodes, famous British Econo-Imperialist who endowed the Rhodes scholarships, and who is also the namesake for Rhodesia.
And of course, Rhode Island used to be both a road and an island. George Washington ordered it to be built in 1848 in order to connect Massachusets to Connecticuit more fully. Unfortunately, due to an engineering blunder, the road was built entirely out to sea, where it became known as “Road Island”.
After being struck by Hurricane Camille in 1853, Road Island was blown completely into shore, where it attached between Massachusets and Connecticuit. And of course, 1853 is the year when Cecil Rhodes was born, so the island (now part of the mainland) was later renamed in his honor.
