I think this was rigged from the start. Someone decided a long time ago that it would be the uncontroversial bear, as the other two choices were obviously too weird to gain enough broad fan support. Ackbar would have been awesome.

Where did you hear that? Everything I’ve read/seen on the issue suggested that Lucas’s response was ambivalent and didn’t slam the door shut on the idea, but the Ole Miss administration pretty much put the kibosh on the idea.

Alasdair, they wouldn’t have been changing their name to “Ackbar” or the “Ackbars,” any more than they’re changing their name now to the “Rebel Black Bears.” They remain the “Rebels,” and would have remained the “Rebels” if Ackbar were the mascot. The mascot and the nickname are different things. Sometimes they’re the same (LSU Tigers, Colorado Buffaloes, Georgia Bulldogs), and sometimes they’re not — USC isn’t the Travelers and Notre Dame isn’t the Leprechauns and Western Kentucky isn’t the Giant Red Blobby Things.

David, that’s exactly the statement I was referencing as ambivalent and equivocal. I don’t read it as slamming the door on Ackbar. It sounds more like Lucas was treating the whole thing as a joke than anything else. “He won’t be available because he’s fighting evil forces in another galaxy” isn’t quite the same as “we demand you not infringe our copyright in this manner.” If someone came to Lucasfilms with a serious proposal, I don’t think we know what his reaction would have been — certainly we don’t know based on that letter alone.
