LRT Pac-10 Power Rankings week 12

Only six of ten teams in action this week as Oregon, Arizona, ASU and WSU all had byes. All three games turned into blow outs, with underdogs Washington and Oregon State pulling the upsets and #6 Stanford rolling over Cal.

1. Oregon
10-0 (7-0 Pac 10)
LW: 1
Bye week for the Ducks, home versus Arizona Friday on ESPN. Can #1 stay on top for another week?

2. Stanford
10-1 (7-1)
LW: 2
The Cardinal issued an epic beat down of Cal, proving again they are the best 1 loss team in the country. Now they just need to take care of business against the Beavers next weekend and odds are they are BCS bound.

3. Arizona
7-3 (4-3)
LW: 4
Bye week for the Pac-10’s only other bowl eligible team who travel up to Oregon next weekend before a home date with ASU on Thursday December 2nd to finish out the season. Slim chance they beat the Ducks, but good chance they beat the Sun Devils to finish 8-4 and likely head to the Alamo Bowl.

4. Oregon State
5-5 (4-3)
LW: 10
One week removed from a home loss to the bottom dwelling WSU Cougars (and it wasn’t close) the Beavers turned around and gave the same type of beat down to the Trojans. Yeah I didn’t see that one coming either, if you did you are lying, or a Beaver fan. Suddenly what looked like an impossible task of getting to six wins isn’t such a long shot. On the other hand those games are against Stanford and Oregon, so its still a long shot.

5. USC
7-4 (4-4)
LW: 3
Rough week for the Trojans is putting it lightly. The Beavers dominated that game and QB Matt Barkley could be out for the season after suffering a high ankle sprain. Will this finally be the year the Irish are able to beat USC? I sure hope not, but back up Mitch Mustain didn’t exactly impress.

6. ASU
4-6 (2-5)
LW: 6
The Sun Devils were off this week, but have already been eliminated from bowl contention with their sixth loss and two games against 1-AA foes. Next Friday they are up against the Bruins who are likely going to be on their third string QB after Richard Brehaut got a concussion in the game on Thursday vs. Washington.

7. Washington
4-6 (3-4)
LW: 8
A strong defensive win for the Dawgs in their last home game of the year and Jake Lockers last game in Husky Stadium (actually true for next years Seniors as well since the Huskies will play in Qwest Field next year while Husky Stadium undergoes renovations). The Huskies bowl hopes are still alive, but they must win out to make it. Winnable games against Cal and WSU remain but the Bears have been tough at home and the Cougars aren’t completely awful this year.

8. Cal
5-6 (3-5)
LW: 5
After getting absolutely throttled by the Cardinal the Bears need a win against the Huskies next week to reach 6-6 and bowl eligibility. The Bears looked like they had a shot for the upset after nearly taking out Oregon the week before, but completely fell apart against Stanford, so its anybody’s guess which Cal team shows up.

9. Washington State
2-9 (1-7)
LW: 9
Cougars are off until December 4th for the Apple Cup against Washington. Paul Wulff looks to have done enough to keep his job for the last year showing actual progress in Pullman, but a win over rival Washington would surely clinch the deal.

10. UCLA
4-6 (2-5)
LW: 7
The Bruins took an early lead, but a defensive struggle went the Huskies way, in particular with the loss of QB Richard Brehaut. Rick Neuheisal’s seat looks to be heating up. Up next a trip to the desert for a game against ASU before ending the season at home versus USC.

    Truer. Words. Never. Spoken.

The Sun Devils were off this week, but have already been eliminated from bowl contention with their sixth loss and two games against 1-AA foes.

There’s been some discussion about the possibility of the NCAA relaxing this rule if fewer than 70 teams are bowl-eligible, since they’d probably rather have a 6-6 team with two wins over 1-AA go to a bowl instead of facing the embarrassing specter of a 5-7 team going bowling. So the Sun Devils should root against every team on the bowl bubble.

I think it’s hilarious that the Pac-10 could end up with as few as three eligible bowl teams — and yet still be Sagarin’s #1 rated conference.

I blame USC (for being ineligible due to sanctions, but still able to beat eligible teams) and Wazzu (for winning a game)!

Makes sense to me, they are good enough to beat up on each other. Also yeah I blame the NCAA for the ridiculous sanctions against SC and the Beavers for Cougin it agains the Cougs.

P.S. Very realistically, the Pac-10 could end up with five 5-7 teams (if Oregon State loses to Oregon & Stanford; UCLA beats Arizona State but loses to USC; Arizona State also loses to Arizona; and Washington beats Cal but — in the only part of this scenario that’s slightly outlandish, but still within the realm of possibility, given recent events — loses to Wazzu). That’s NUTS! Three teams going bowling, including two potentially in the BCS; five teams at 5-7; one team that’s not allowed to go bowling; and only ONE REALLY BAD TEAM in the entire conference (and yet a bad team which, in this scenario, would be responsible for two of the five 5-7 teams being 5-7 instead of 6-6).

No other conference has more to gain from the NCAA potentially allowing 5-7 teams in, if there aren’t 70 bowl-eligible teams.

Yeah that BYU loss keeps coming back to bite the Huskies in the ass. We really pooched the screw on that one. I’m still hoping we have a new special teams coach next season. Our special teams this year have been embarrassing and game killing. I also think that Nick Holt is over paid for the performance I’ve seen so far.

Also might have helped if Locker hadn’t been sick in the ASU game and then had a cracked/broken rib afterwards.
