Tropical Storm Dora (the Explorer)

Tropical Storm Dora has formed in the Eastern Pacific, south of Mexico, and is expected to become a major hurricane within the next three days. This has produced an amusing tweet exchange among those of us familiar with the storm’s Nickelodeon namesake (Loyacita’s favorite show in the universe by far): Andy Glockner: “Can you say dangerously high winds? Say it!… Read more »

On the eve of the big day, I went outside to install our infant car seat — and when I opened the garage door, I saw this: Larger view here. P.S. I’m not sure how much Becky or I will be updating our respective Twitter feeds tomorrow. Probably not too much. But to the extent we post any updates, you’ll… Read more »

We’re having a baby tomorrow

2 Comments on We’re having a baby tomorrow

Or maybe later today. But probably tomorrow. At Becky’s OB checkup this morning, we learned that there’s been some progress since last Tuesday, and there is no longer any reason to even contemplate delaying the long-planned, and repeatedly hinted at, July 12 induction (that’s at 40 weeks + 4 days, for those scoring at home). So, tomorrow it is, unless… Read more »

[UPDATE: Apparently, liftoff occurred with just 58 seconds left in the… Read more »

Improvisation FTW

Jason Isaacs, the actor who plays Lucius Malfoy, relates a great story I hadn’t heard before about how a memorable exchange in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was improvised: I remember my very first day, I improvised a line. … I had to kind of flounce out of a room when Dumbledore, played by the late, great Richard… Read more »

1982 article: “Study says technology could transform society”

Comments Off on 1982 article: “Study says technology could transform society”

An old New York Times article predicting, in broad terms, the rise and impact of the Internet, published on the day Becky was born — June 14, 1982 — is making the rounds on Twitter tonight. The article reports on an NSF-affiliated study that, once you get past the silly names (“teletext and videotex”), is remarkably prescient in many ways…. Read more »
