The grand tradition and pageantry of college football’s bowl season continues tonight with the Great-Grandnephew Of Them All, the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl between Southern Miss (8-4) and Louisville (6-6, with a win over UConn and otherwise a whole lot of nothin’, having beaten 7-5 Syracuse, 4-8 Rutgers, 4-8 Arkansas State, 1-11 Memphis, and 6-5 FCS team Eastern Kentucky) at 6:00… Read more »

Christmas caroling: it’s a WAR!!!

2 Comments on Christmas caroling: it’s a WAR!!!

Well, okay, that title is not actually true at all. But a few minutes ago, inspiration struck on Twitter, as I tried to find a way to merge my “the SEC: it’s a WAR!!!” meme with the hashtag craze of the moment, #RejectedReindeerNames (a rather stupid craze, although I thought my “Wolf Blitzen” entry was fairly good). Anyway, after trying… Read more »

12-team Big Ten reveals laughable new logo, stupid division names

As if the fuzzy math inherent in its conference name wasn’t bad enough, the Big Ten — after literally months of thought and consideration by its, uh, braintrust — today revealed a new logo and division names that are in the process of being universally mocked, ridiculed, and generally snarked into oblivion by the Twitter hordes. And with good reason,… Read more »

How to save the BCS & the bowls, and appease the critics

In an op-ed for USA Today, BCS Head Bill Hancock lays out his defenseof the BCS, arguing that the system worked. He’s dead wrong, and either doesn’t get it or doesn’t care. The system didn’t work because teams like Boise State, if they had finished undefeated, or TCU, who DID finish undefeated, don’t get a shot at the national championship…. Read more »

BREAKING: Urban Meyer resigning, again

4 Comments on BREAKING: Urban Meyer resigning, again

One year after retiring and then un-retiring, Florida’s coach is stepping down, again. Retiring into obscurity, for real this time? Positioning himself to be the next head coach of Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos? Trying to secure the coveted title “The Brett Favre of Coaches” by un-resigning (again) next week? Joining the WAC as its eighth football member? Simply… Read more »

Computer glitch puts LSU, Boise State in wrong order in final BCS standings

This is pretty incredible: The final BCS ratings show LSU ranked 10th and Boise State 11th. But I discovered a mistake that would switch the order of those teams. The Broncos should be BCS No. 10. Wes Colley’s final rankings, as submitted to the BCS, were incorrect. The Appalachian State-Western Illinois FCS playoff game was missing from his data set…. Read more »
