The 5th annual Living Room Times Bowl Pick ’em Contest is open for signups. To enter, just click here, then follow the links to either create an ESPN.com account or sign into your existing account, and enter your picks. (You can change your pick for each game up until kickoff time.)

Because the contest is being run through ESPN, which has extremely limited group customization features, the scoring system will be quite simple: 1 point per correct bowl-game pick. No spread, no confidence points; just pick the winner of each game. So the person with the best win-loss record in predicting the 34 bowls will be the contest champion. Any ties will be broken by rules #1-3 here, with the “Tiebreaker Game” being the Alabama-Texas championship game.

Last year, using this same scoring system, Amy Booth won with a prediction record of 21-13, defeating Sören Hammerschmidt on a tiebreaker. Prior winners (under the older, more complex scoring system, when the contest was run through the now-defunct collegefantasysports.com bowl pick ’em system) are Seth Carmack in 2007-08, Ben Sloniker in 2006-07, and Brian Dupuis in 2005-06.

As per usual, there will be no physical prize for this year’s winner — just digital glory among your peers here on the blog (and Facebook, Twitter, etc.). For this reason, contestants are encouraged to make their “pick set names” recognizable, whether as your real name, or as a regularly used blog comment handle / Twitter username / whatever, so that people (including me) will know who you are. After all, you can’t bask in the glory of a hard-earned victory if your entry is virtually anonymous!

This year’s first bowl game kicks off at 4:30 PM Eastern on Saturday, December 19.

I gotta say, there are some pretty decent bowl matchups among similarly ranked teams. #11 Penn State vs. #13 LSU. #15 BYU vs. #16 Oregon State. #20 Nebraska vs. #22 Arizona. And of course the BCS: #1 vs. #2, #3 vs. #6, #4 vs. #5, #7 vs. #8, #9 vs. #10. The system still sucks, but at least we have some entertaining-on-paper games to look forward to.

‘Tis the season to be jolly

If you’re wondering why I wasn’t live-blogging or live-tweeting the BCS selections Sunday evening, the above video is your answer. While the college football gods were conspiring to give us TCU vs. Boise State in the Tostitos Die-Cinderella-Die Bowl, Becky and I were busy hosting the 15th (give or take) Annual (more or less) Loy Family Christmas Lights Extravaganza. It’s the continuation of a tradition that dates back to my childhood — here’s video of selected ceremonies from 1995-2008 — and tonight we brought it to our new house in Denver, the first major party/event we’ve hosted here.

It took weeks of preparation, but we pulled it off. The lights were a hit, as were Becky’s homemade cookies, wassail, and various other goodies.

The main event, of course, was the countdown to the lights at 5:30 PM. The video of the countdown was taken from four different cameras: one in our great room, one on the stairs facing the tree, one in our bedroom looking down on the back yard, and one in my car looking in at the front porch (which was unfortunately obscured somewhat by snow that had fallen on my car window). The view from the car was also broadcast live, via our house intranet, to the TV screen in the living room, which a couple of our IT-oriented friends found terribly amusing. 🙂

The one minor snafu involved the timing of the Christmas music that was supposed to accompany the lighting (it’s always the music that gets messed up!), but as you can see in the video, nobody seemed to notice, nevermind care. All in all, the whole thing was a smashing success, not least because of the large and enthusiastic audience — easily my biggest crowd for a Christmas lighting ceremony since dozens of dormmates crammed into my tiny Trojan Hall room freshman year, and probably even bigger than that. There were certainly more little kids than ever before, thanks to Becky’s army of mommy friends. We had wee ones ranging from weeks-old babies to 18-month-old triplets to 5- and 6-year old boys rampaging around the house. It was utter chaos, but in a good, fun way. 🙂

Oh, and for those familiar with the tradition of the “Light Nazi speech,” here’s a video of the 1999 original and the 2009 tenth-anniversary edition.

Below is a photo showing part of our great room and front hallway, including (at right) our glorious 3-foot Christmas tree, lit up with brilliant LED lights and safely nestled atop our entertainment center, high above the fray of toddler-world below. 🙂

Here’s a closer view of the tree, which is just about perfectly Loyette-sized. If you look closely, you can see the U.S.S. Enterprise ornament near the bottom right:

On the other hand, here’s a wider panoramic view, stitched together from a series of photos, showing virtually our entire great room:

Larger version here. You can also see, in the new blog masthead, a similarly constructed panoramic shot of our back yard. Here’s a closer view of the LED-lit tree and some other features in the yard:

The lights aren’t National Lampoon-worthy, but I figure we’ll be living in this house for many Christmases to come, so I’ve gotta give myself some room to “top myself” each year. By the time Loyette and Loyacita are teenagers capable of being thoroughly embarrassed by their dad’s silly countdown tradition and overly ostentatious light displays, watch out. 🙂

Marty West wins Pick ’em contest

martywest-iowaMarty West, frequent blog commenter and die-hard Iowa fan, had more than just a Hawkeyes invite to the Orange Bowl to celebrate this weekend. Thanks to a win by Washington and a near-win by Nebraska, West edged out Phillip Price to capture the championship of the first annual Living Room Times College Football Pick ’em Contest by one point, 153-152.

Price, a 2007 Notre Dame Law School alum, led West by a point heading into Saturday evening’s games. But Price had picked Cal and Texas to cover against Washington (+7) and Nebraska (+14.5), respectively, whereas West picked the underdog Huskies and Huskers to beat the spread. In fact, Texas won by just 1 point, and Cal lost by 32 in a shocker. As a result, Price got both games wrong, and lost his lead. West got both right, and won the contest with a prediction record of 153-105 (.593).

Up next, of course, is the Living Room Times Bowl Pick ’em Contest. I’ll try to get that set up sometime this week. The first bowl game is December 19, twelve days away.

UPDATE: The Bowl Pick ’em Contest is online.

The BCS show was as predicted, and all the other bowl games have shaken out at this point, with one exception: the EagleBank Bowl has to wait for the result of the Army/Navy game next Saturday. If Army wins, the Black Knights will edge out the UCLA Bruins.

Here’s the BCS setup:

Championship: #1 Alabama vs #2 Texas
Rose: #7 Oregon vs #8 Ohio State
Fiesta: #4 TCU vs #6 Boise State
Orange: #9 Georgia Tech vs #10 Iowa
Sugar: #3 Cincinnati vs #5 Florida

The whole bowl schedule can be found here.
